Tuberculosis is an increasingly important public health problem in developing countries. We studied 111 tuberculosis patients confirmed by mycobacteria isolation between 1998 and 2000 in Rio Grande, in south Brazil. One-hundred-thirteen pulmonary and extrapulmonary clinical materials were examined through culture by the Ogawa-Kudoh method and through smear examination by the Ziehl-Nielsen or Kinyoun methods. The identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was done through the usual phenotypical methods. The proportion method (indirect technique) was used to determine the resistance of isolates. Eight additional rice cultivars as differentials were selected to identify pathotypes occurring in the Tocantins State. These differentials were used in addition to the international set to determine the pathogenic diversity of 193 Pyricularia oryzae isolates collected during 1994-2002 from irrigated rice cultivars. According to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS, 2004), a method to evaluate the inducible clindamycin resistance in accordance with an approach of the disks of erythromycin and clindamycin - the D test - has been reported. We analyzed the performance of this method in 200 coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) strains obtained from blood cultures of hospitalized patients at a general hospital in Southern Brazil. Twenty-seven clinical isolates with suitable profile (erythromycin-resistant and clindamycin-susceptible) were evaluated for the D test realization. Thus, only 5 CoNS were D test positive. A hundred and seventy monoconidial isolates of the pathogen virulent to 'Primavera' and 139 to 'BRS Bonança' collected from eight fields, during two years (2001-2003) were tested, under greenhouse conditions, on six newly released rice cultivars. It is important to understand the effects of weather, insect density and plant cultivar on insect abundance to predict and prevent crop production loss. The present work investigated the influence of such factors on aphid in alfalfa during one year (short term). Data was collected from September/1997 to August/1998 at Canchin Farm (CCPSE-EMBRAPA), São Carlos, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Weather conditions had, in general, little effect on the variation of aphid populations, but Therioaphis maculata abundance was negatively correlated to humidity.
